The Last Emperor

from The Age of Antiquity by Nephelinite

/

about

Inspired by medieval texts which purported to describe the end of days, most notably the Apocalypse of Pseudo-Methodius which saw the Islamic conquest of the Mediterranean world as a sign of the end times. This text also introduces the concept of a messianic Roman Emperor/Saviour who would rise, place his crown upon the cross and save all of Christendom from the "sons of Ishmael". While profoundly offensive in this day and age, it's a fascinating look at the possible genesis of "fake news" - the created text purported to be accurate and was read widely before being debunked by scholars much later on.

The influence of this work was so widespread that in the 13th century, it was invoked to describe the Mongolian armies who conquered their way into Hungary and threatened to scourge the rest of Europe before suddenly withdrawing due to the death of their Khan.
